JU protesters unveil dossier on VC’s ‘graft’

OUR Correspondent, JU

Jahangirnagar University (JU) protesters have unveiled a compilation of documents allegedly showing the corruption of vice-chancellor Prof. Farzana Islam in the form of a ledger book. They unveiled the ledger at a press conference, held at the teachers’ lounge of New Arts Building yesterday afternoon. The 224-page book contained instances of various irregularities and reports of corruption appearing in different newspapers.

The protesters also gave a detailed explanation about their movement against corruption on the campus, enumerated problems of the master plan of JU’s mega development project, and BCL attacks on them. They highlighted alleged acts of corruption in recruiting the project director and forming different committees regarding the master plan.

Besides, they also presented cartoons, graffiti, paintings, letters to the chancellor, memorandums, leaflets, and press releases that were issued in the last four months to protest against the alleged corruption of the JU VC.

Environment Science Department Prof Jamal Uddin said: “Prof Farzana Islam is regularly supporting different irregularities and instances of corruption in this university. Her real character came out after the approval of the JU mega project in the ECNEC. After giving a huge amount of money to the BCL illegally, she lost her right to hold the VC’s post.” Mahthir Muhammad, an organiser of the protest platform, said: “Prof. Farzan Islam should not hold her post after giving away money to the BCL, provoking attacks on the protesters, and indulging in corruption in the master plan. Even BCL leaders have confessed about her corruption.

This is not a platform for the VC’s removal but a forum to raise voices against her corruption.”

Convener of the platform, Prof. Raihan Rayen, read out the introduction to the ledger book. At the press meet, the protestors announced a new programme for the next two days, including demonstration, exhibition of still photographs, and mass gatherings.
