wo killed in road accident

BSS, Noakhali

Two persons were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck in Ashwadia union under Sadar upazila here on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Ripon, 21, and Javed, 18, both hailed from Aiyubpur village of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sudharampur Model Police Station Nobir Hossain said the accident occurred at 10pm last night when a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Wapda pole area of Ashwadia union under Noakhali Sadar upazila, leaving two people dead on the spot. One critically injured passenger was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital. Later, he was referred to Chittagong for better treatment.

The OC said the truck driver was arrested and both the truck and CNG-run auto-rickshaw were seized from the spot.

‘Lovers take their own lives’

UNB, Magura

Two in-laws, who reportedly had an extra-marital affair, allegedly killed themselves at a village in the sadar upazila.

The deceased are Pinki, 19, wife of Ramproshad Pramanik of Batajor village and Sagor Biswas, 22, son of Shyamol Biswas of sadar upazila of Jhenaidah.

Locals said Pinki returned to her house at Batajor from her parent’s residence in Narail on Wednesday afternoon. Sagor, a relative of Pinki’s elder brother’s in-laws, came to Pinki’s house from Jhenidah. Pinki’s husband Horiproshad returned from the market at night and found their bodies hanging from the ceiling. Saiful Islam, OC of Magura Sadar Police Station, said they have lodged a case over the incident and sent the bodies to a hospital for autopsy.

He said they are investigating the incident.

Every year, nearly 800,000 people kill themselves and there are many more people who attempt suicide, according to WHO. Data from the police headquarters show that the rate of suicides is increasing. In 2017, about 30 people on average took their own lives every day.

Two children drown in pond

UNB, Kurigram

Two children drowned together in a pond at Rajarhat of Kurigram on Tuesday.

Local people informed that Yakub, 6, son of Nur Islam and Rabbi, 7, son of Hossain Ali of village Horishwar Taluk of Sadar upazila, went out for playing together.

However, since they remained missing till evening, the family members started searching the children. At one stage, they found the bodies in the pond entangling each other. A pall of gloom descended over the incident in the area.

Nazrul Islam, OC (Investigation) of Rajarhat police station, said that he heard about the incident.

Phensidyl recovered from train

UNB, Benapole

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members recovered 253 bottles of phensidyl from a stone-laden freight train coming from India at Benapole Railway Station on Monday night.

Md Nurul Islam, Nayek at Benapole Camp, said tipped off, they searched a compartment of the train around 8pm and recovered 253 bottles of phensidyl.

3 dredging machines seized

UNB, Manikganj

A mobile court seized three dredging machines used for illegal sand lifting in Dhaleshwari River in Saturia upazila on Tuesday.

The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate and Saturia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Alam, conducted a drive in the river and seized three dredgers. The sand lifters fled the site before the mobile court arrived.

Later, the local administration set fire to the three dredging machines.
