Two posts of addl IGP to be created

DEEPAK ACHARJEE, Dhaka

Two posts of additional inspector general (Addl. IG) of police would be created for the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) as their chiefs soon. The public administration ministry and the finance ministry have given clearance for the two posts, sources in the police headquarters said. For the two posts of additional IGP (grade-2), a proposal has been prepared by the Public Security Division of the home ministry, and it would be sent to the Cabinet Division for being placed before the next meeting of the Secretary Committee on Administrative Improvement Affairs, the sources added. After getting approval from the secretary committee, the proposal, with recommendations, would be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), seeking final approval of the Prime Minister. Next, a gazette notification would be issued by the home ministry, a senior official of the Public Security Division of the home ministry told The Independent.

According to the proposal, the police headquarters has sent a proposal of creating six different posts of additional IGP for the police department—three for the police headquarters and one each for the CMP, Highways Police, and the PBI—for strengthening the operational activities of the police force.

But the public administration ministry has given approval for creating only four posts of additional IGPs—one for the police headquarters, and one each for the CMP, Highways Police, and the PBI, the proposal says.

When the proposal was sent to the Finance Division, it approved only two posts of additional IGP—one for the police headquarters and another for Highways Police, which was

approved by the Secretary Committee on Administrative Improvement Affairs.

At the same time, the committee asked the authorities to take the opinion of ministries concerned for creating two posts of additional IGPs, one each for the CMP and PBI, the proposal added.

In the proposal, the home ministry and the police headquarters say the two posts of additional IGP should be created for the CMP and the PBI to maintain the chain of command and strengthen their activities.

At present, there is a deputy inspector general (DIG) of police heading a 7,000-strong manpower in the CMP, while a police officer of the same rank leads the PBI with a 2,029-strong manpower.

There are only 11 posts of additional IG in the police department.

During the regime of Sheikh Hasina, the police authorities have formed several police units like the Police Bureau of Counter Terrorism, Rangpur Metropolitan Police, Gazipur Metropolitan Police, and Airport Armed Police Battalion.

The police department has also formed an industrial police unit, Rangpur Range, Range Reserve Force (RRF) of Rangpur, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), two Security Protection Battalions, 30 In-service Training Centres, Tourist Police, and Naval Police unit. It has also set up a number of new police stations and police investigation centres by creating a number of posts. The members of the Bangladesh Police play a crucial role in maintaining peace and enforcing law and order. Currently, there are about 212,000 personnel working in the police department.
