Bangladesher Smajtantrik Dal (BSD) formed a human chain in the city yesterday condemning death of a patient of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Barishal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH). They also demanded immediate steps for sufficient equipment and manpower in this unit. They formed the human chain and agitation rally in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall and brought out a procession in the city on Friday noon to press home their demand In the rally, Imran Habib Rumon, convener of BSD Barishal unit, said all the ten ventilation machines of ICU at SBMCH were out of order from Tuesday last, so Dr Maruf Hossain, 30, failed to receive any ventilation services he needed and died.

Dr Manisha Chakraborty, member secretary of BSD Barishal unit, said, “Hospital authority could not deny their responsibility in this regard and we want justice”. Mentionable, ICU of SBMCH itself needs emergency care as most of the equipment went out of order and manpower crisis intensified since last three months. Due to that reason, most of the patients were referred to Dhaka for better treatment without any backup support.

Mosaref Hossain, father of victim Dr Maruf Hossain Nayan, said his son was a physician of Diabetic Hospital of the city and admitted to Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of SBMCH for asthmatic complications on Monday night.

He needs ventilation and so was transferred to ICU unit immediately.

But as all ventilation apparatus of the unit was out of order, so he was referred to Dhaka by ambulance without any ventilation support and he succumbed on the way on Tuesday (December 10) morning, father of the victim told.

SBMCH authority formed a four-member probe committee, led by Dr Jasimuddin, deputy director of SBMCH, in this connection.

They asked to submit report within seven working days to investigate this allegation of unnatural death due to negligence of service, said Dr Bakir Hossain, director, SBMCH Barishal.

Dr Najmul Ahsan, the only doctor out of ten, said this ICU unit has no equipment needed to face any emergency medicare and most of the installed apparatus of the unit are now out of order.

“So we could only admit 2-3 general patients at a time at the unit and referred other serious patients like Maruf Hossain Nayon to Dhaka for better treatment”, he added.

Sahnaz Parvin, nursing in-charge of ICU unit, said the unit opened on July 23, 2017 and from the beginning only one physician looking after the unit with acute shortage of apparatus and manpower.

Dr Bakir Hosaain, director, SBMCH, said, “We put the matter before the meeting with the secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at Dhaka on November 27 this year and applied for the approval of ten ventilation unit, including five from our own funds and five from the ministry.

But we are still waiting for the final decision.”
