Shanto enjoys top order role

Nazmul Hossain Shanto, top-order batsman of the national cricket team, believes the team will perform well against Pakistan.

“Of course, it will be challenging. But if we play as a team and a unit, we should fare well in Pakistan,” Shanto told reporters after the team’s second day practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

The 21-year-old batsman returned to the fold ahead of the Pakistan tour after his outstanding batting performance in the just-concluded Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Shanto scored a scintillating century and an impressive 78 runs in two successive matches.

“We are not thinking much about their team. We are thinking about ourselves and how we can execute our plan. If we play to our strengths and as per the plan, I believe we should do well in Pakistan,” Shanto said.

Shanto has played in two Tests and as many T20 internationals for the team, as well as three one-day internationals (ODIs), after beginning his international career in 2017, said.

“As I have been included in the squad, I am ready to play at every position that the team demands. Whatever the position, I will always try to perform well,” the left-handed batsman revealed.

“Normally, I bat at the top of the order. I enjoy batting at that position. However, as a professional, I have to bat wherever I get chance. Big players show their ability to bat regardless of the position they play at. I too am preparing myself to perform wherever I get a chance to play,” he added.

“There were so many players in the line-up. The selectors picked me for the tour because of their faith in me. But I am not thinking about it much. I have to play a big role if I take Mushfiq (ur Rahman) bhai’s place,” he said, responding to a query.

He added: “I have done well in the last few matches. And I’ve gained confidence from the BPL. If I can maintain that confidence, I should do well.”

Asked about the security situation in Pakistan, Shanto said, “I’m not thinking about it, as we have no control over those matters. Instead, I am preparing myself mentally so that I can score runs in this format of the game.”

He also said: “Most of our players played in the BPL and performed well. So, we are all in very good touch with game. So, even though we are not playing any practice matches before the main series, it should not be a big problem for us.”

Thinking back to the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup of 2018 in Pakistan, where Shanto led the emerging team from Bangladesh, he hoped the wickets were of similar quality.

“That year we played on very good sporting wickets. If bowlers bowl in the right areas, they will get help from the wickets, as will the batsmen. If we play as per our plan, we should score big runs on those wickets,” he said.
