Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie has lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her leadership by giving shelter to the displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh. Jolie, also an acclaimed Hollywood superstar, in a letter to Sheikh Hasina, said the UNHCR would continue its engagement with Myanmar to create a suitable condition for the safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas

She highly appreciated Bangladesh for giving shelter to the Rohingyas and ensuring their safety and security. Jolie highly lauded Bangladesh for the generosity and the leadership it has demonstrated in the Rohingya crisis. The letter was sent to the prime minister recently, the foreign ministry said.

She hoped that Bangladesh’s initiatives for the Rohingyas would help get better funding for the 2020 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis which would be launched in March 2020. She expressed her firm commitment to continue advocacy for the humanitarian response for the Rohingyas and expressed gratefulness to the people of Bangladesh for all kinds of support. Angelina Jolie visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar in February 2019 in her capacity as the UNHCR special envoy.

Since the influx of Rohingyas in August 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting more than 1.1 million Rohingyas at different camps located in Cox’s Bazar.

Though a long time has elapsed but the repatriation of the Rohingyas has not been commenced yet despite two abortive attempts.

Though different countries and United Nations agencies are telling Myanmar to create a conducive environment for the sustainable return, Myanmar is yet to pay any heed to it.  Recently, the International Court of Justice issued provisional measures by telling Myanmar to stop killing in Myanmar and creating environment for Rohingyas.

The World Court urged to “take all measures within its power” to prevent the killing of Rohingya, or causing bodily or mental harm to members of the group, including by the military or “any irregular armed units”.

As per the Court Order, the country also has to submit a report to the ICJ within four months, with additional reports due every six months “until a final decision on the case is rendered by the Court.”
