AL vows to stay with people

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said their party will remain beside the people amid the coronavirus pandemic. “The AL does politics for the people. Party leaders and workers will remain beside the people in these days of humanitarian crisis,” he said while briefing the media at the party president's Dhanmondi political office in the city.  Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, urged the affluent people of the country to extend a helping hand during the crisis created by the global coronavirus outbreak. “On behalf of the AL, I call upon the affluent people to stand beside the poor and the destitute,” he said.

He also called upon the people not to pay heed to any rumour over the ongoing coronavirus crisis. It can be seen from the past that the people have always tackled all kinds of disasters by keeping their patience and playing responsible roles, he added.

The AL leader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is issuing instructions round-the-clock to the authorities concerned for tacking the coronavirus crisis and has already formulated short- and long-term plans in this respect. “We must remain alert against the coronavirus. We must follow the health guidelines to prevent the spread of the deadly virus,” Quader also said.

The coronavirus has put the whole world in a crisis and put a halt to all social and economic activities, he said, adding that the AL is conducting coronavirus prevention programmes and awareness campaigns across the country to address the ongoing crisis.  The minister also said the AL leaders and activists are standing by the poor and common people by distributing virus-prevention materials among them.

AL presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury, its relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, and office secretary Dilip Barua were present at the press conference.
