The Independent to stay online for now in view of COVID-19

The Independent to stay online for now in view of COVID-19

In view of the prevailing situation stemming from COVID-19, The Independent newspaper has decided to stop its print edition for the time being from tomorrow (Wednesday, April 8, 2020). The newspaper had been in continuous circulation for over the past 25 years.

However, ever since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus the print media has been hit particularly hard. For the last couple of months The Independent has been bringing out the newspaper under tremendous constraints. Currently our distribution has taken a major blow due to this pandemic. As a matter of fact even before the coronavirus outbreak struck, the news industry was suffering from the unrelenting march of readers from print to online and the precipitous decline of print advertising money flowing to newspapers.

The situation has worsened amidst the pandemic. Since the outbreak of the pandemic the distribution channel of the newspaper has been severely disrupted. Many of the employees are not being able to carry out their responsibilities because of the virtual lockdown. The advertisement revenue, on which survival of newspapers depends, is likely to come down even more. The circulation is declining rapidly.

The temporary suspension of the publication of the newspaper was not an easy decision to make. But the sad fact is that at this moment continuing to bring out the print edition of The Independent is simply not sustainable.

However, we would like to reassure our readers, patrons, and well wishers that the decision to stop the print edition is a temporary one. In the mean time, we will be available to our readers on our online platform www.theindependentbd.com.

Once things start to change for the better The Independent will definitely hit the newsstands again. Any inconvenience caused is regretted.
