Host Ctg Abahani firm to start mission with victory

Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament is set to kick off from today with seven teams fighting for the title of the third edition of the lone international club cup football tournament. The Port City is ready to start the tournament at the MA Aziz Stadium, when the host Chittagong Abahani Limited will take on the defending champions TC Sports Club of Maldives in the opening match which will  start 7pm.

Meanwhile, earlier eight teams, three from Bangladesh and five from abroad were lined up to take part in the tournament but the Bangladesh Premier League runners-up Abahani Limited withdrew their name at the eleventh hour showing their insufficient preparation. The ground of the MA Aziz Stadium is also fully prepared and ready while there was some hesitation, as the cricket pitch was at the mid-circle of the field but the ground men did big job when they scrapped the pitch and made the ground playable.

However, seven teams, who confirmed and had already joined in a pre-match press conference yesterday at the MA Aziz Stadium Chittagong. Organisers, who have been trying to include another Indian team Gokulam Kerela FC but they have yet to get the confirmation, as the tournament is to begin with seven teams. However, all the seven teams’ coaches, managers, captains joined in the press conference yesterday when they all stated their preparations, targets with the tournament.

Maruful Haque, who took the charge as head coach of the host Chittagong Abahani Limited, is very much optimistic with his team’s performance despite having a team just amassed with played including from different teams and newly included players from abroad. “I hope all the players are experienced and they are enough skilled to adjust. You see in the first edition Chittagong Abahani became champions and that time also the team was formed including players from different teams.”

Captain Jamal Bhuiyan, about the team combination said, “We are all professional players, in professional football you can’t always eat biscuit or drink tea together, so you have to adjust with the team work. Actually how we play, react in the ground is factor. Chittagong Abahani were champions and we will be champions this time also.”  

Coach of the TC Sports Club, Afia Mohammed Hamid said that they are here with preparation to regain the title.

“We are defending champions, so we will try to regain to title and we came here with preparation. No pressure, as champions but will play with full motivation,” said Hamid.
