A bill titled "Kurigram Agricultural  University Bill-2021" was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) today with a  vision to enrich the agriculture of the country's northern parts through  education and research.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni moved the bill in the House which was  unanimously passed by voice votes with JS Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury  in the chair.

While placing the bill, Dr Dipu Moni said the agricultural university  which will be the first in the district will help to improve the overall  agricultural education of the country.

BNP lawmakers Harunur Rashid, Barrister Rumeen Farhana, Independent  lawmaker Rezaul Karim Bablu, Jatiya party lawmakers Mujibul Huq, Ponir Uddin  Ahmed and Pir Fazlur Rahman elaborately discussed on the bill.

Earlier on March 9, a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister  Sheikh Hasina approved the Kurigram Agricultural University Draft Law, 2021.

According to the draft, the university will take necessary steps for  teaching, research and training at various undergraduate and postgraduate
levels in agricultural sciences. In addition to educational activities, it  will exhibit sustainable agricultural technology and high yielding  agricultural products.

The bill stipulates that the Chancellor of the University will appoint an  agronomist or an eminent professor, involved in agricultural education and  research, as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) for a term of four years as directed by  the President.

Moreover, no one can be appointed as VC for more than two terms.
