Sri Chinmoy Centre in Dhaka along with other branches of the organization around the world observed the 13th death anniversary of Sri Chinmoy, a philosopher, poet, musician and artist on Sunday, October 11, according to a press release.
Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, better known as Sri Chinmoy was born on August 27, 1931 in Shakpura area of Boalkhali Upazila in Chattogram. He spent his formative years here before moving to South India following the death of his parents.
Sri Chinmoy is best known as a ‘Man of Peace’. He wrote: "Peace does not mean the absence of war. Peace means the presence of harmony, love, oneness and satisfaction. Peace means a flood of love in the world family."
In 1970, at the invitation of U Thant, the third Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), he established ‘Sri Chinmoy: The Peace Meditation’ for delegates and staff members at the UN headquarters. Later, the fifth Secretary-General of UN Perez de Cuellar wrote: “Sri Chinmoy is the heart of the UN. His message was with us, and we were being inspired by him.”
Sri Chinmoy maintained his link with his beloved Bangladesh through his thousands of poems and songs in Bangla. He offered more than 700 free 'Peace Concerts' all around the world.
Sri Chinmoy is also the founder of the ‘International Peace Run’ which has visited more than 100 countries. Millions of people from all walks of life have carried the torch that is passed from runner to runner along the way.
Regarding Sri Chinmoy, Former President of the Soviet Union Gorbachev said, "Your work is to foster peace-making efforts and the spiritual development of humanity. Whatever you dedicate yourself to art, music, poetry, drawing—all this is connected with peace, peace amongst people and peace amongst nations.”
"My brother in peace, we acknowledge the tremendous contribution which you and your peace movement are making to promote global peace," said Nelson Mandela.
“I am so pleased with what you are doing for so many people in so many countries. May God bless you, Sri Chinmoy, and all your wonderful work for peace," said Mother Teresa.
Sri Chinmoy is the author of 1,600 books and has created over 1,30,000 paintings. There are Sri Chinmoy Centres in 71 countries including Bangladesh. The centre offers free meditation classes as well as cultural and sports programmes, the press release added.
