No chance of leading Bangladesh: Mushfiq

Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has ruled out the possibility of him leading the national side in the future. It was speculated recently that Rahim might throw his hat in the ring for captaincy if necessary when he led Beximco Dhaka in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup.

Rahim had earlier declined to captain his team in the BCB President's Cup which prompted the board to hand over the reigns to Nazmul Hossain with the BCB president confirming the 33-year-old's stance.

"Mushfiqur is not ready to take up captaincy and he has informed us," Nazmul Hasan had said. "So we have decided that the three teams will be Tamim XI, Mahmudullah XI and Nazmul XI. Mushfiqur will be in one team but he will not lead the side."

But Rahim's decision to lead the Dhaka side in the T20 competition came in as a surprise to many since the national side's leading batsman didn't show any interest in the leadership role until that point. The middle-order batsman put an end to those speculations by clarifying he took up the role only upon the franchise's insistence.

"I feel there is no chance of leading the national side," Mushfiqur stated. "They (BCB) feel that there are some young players and if they are given a chance (captaincy) in the future it can be beneficial for them. In the national team and in the other teams there are a lot of young players and since I'm not interested in leading the national team, I feel they should be given the chance.

"I think the more they (young players) take responsibility the better and it will help them to be more responsible. In this tournament (Bangabandhu T20) the franchise (corporate house) thinks that I am the best person to guide the team and that is why I have taken up captaincy," he clarified.

Beximco Dhaka will take on Minister Rajshahi in the opening game of the tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on November 24.
