Biplob bags goalkeepers’ training job

Biplob Bhattacharya has opened a new chapter of his career with the national team when he was appointed as the goalkeeping coach right from the first day of 2021.

Biplob signed an agreement for one year with the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) when he will discharge responsibilities as goalkeeping coach for the national side as well as look after the national sides of different age-groups from Under-17 to Under-23.

“I am really excited on joining this job. It’s a dream to be able to work at this level.

I feel honored and I do respect the BFF and its President Kazi Mohammed Salahuddin, who inducted me in their development programme. It’s great to be a part on course of the country’s football development.”

The story of goalkeeping coach Biplob Bhattacharya is very colorful and different than others when the former national star made his debut in 1996 for the national side keeper at the age of 17. The then national team’s coach Otto Pfister choose him.

Biplob, a slim but tall physic man made an amazing debut at his first match in the World Cup qualifying away match against Saudi Arabia when he stunned all by defending a penalty of Saeed Al-Owairan, the then Saudi Arabian international footballer and captain who scored a famous goal in the FIFA World Cup 1994 against Belgium, which is considered as one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time.

Biplob earned a rare feat in his playing career when he was the only player in the South Asian region having a rare achievement to have played in four SA Games. He was a member of the gold winning team of 1999 SA Games and the 2003 SAFF champion team.

However, the BFF approached Biplob considering his wealthy playing career both in the domestic and international level along with the experience of working as the goalkeeping coach of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi club.

He joined as a backroom staff of national team’s head coach Jamie Day with the senior national team, national U-23 and also other age group teams as well as broad spectrum related to goalkeeping development of the country.

Biplob also detailed about his duty when he said, “Not only national team, my job will be with the age group teams also and I will also work in the talent hunt program across the country.

Biplob also explained his entrance in coaching job during his playing life when he did his first spell under Bangladesh national team’s erstwhile head coach Lodewijk de Kruif in 2013. However, he did club coaching with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in 2018-19 season.

“It was a big platform for me as I worked as the goalkeeping coach of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club. I was considered by the BFF as I had the experience of doing the job with a professional team,” said Biplob.

“Now my only endeavor and objective is to achieve success with the new job and to serve the nation as I did in my playing career,” said Biplob who was the captain of national Under19, U-23 and the senior national team.
