DU scraps decision to reopen halls by March 13

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman has dismissed plans to reopen residential halls by March 13 and said that dormitories will be reopened as per the government’s decisions.

"Classes will resume only after vaccinating the students, teachers and employees by April 17," the VC said Tuesday.

The government has decided to reopen residential halls on May 17 and classes will be held in classrooms from May 24.

In a virtual press briefing on Monday, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said that teachers, students and employees will be vaccinated before reopening.

There are 1.30 lakh residential students, 15,000 teachers and 25,000 employees at various public universities.

Regarding the students' protest to open residential halls, the DU VC said, "We hope the students will respect the decision of the government and wait until the halls are reopened officially by the authorities."

On Monday, some students of Dhaka University broke into Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, which had been kept closed citing the coronavirus pandemic.

Later, they left the hall and gave a 72-hours ultimatum to reopen the dormitories by March 1.

Zunayed, a Shahidullah Hall resident student who participated in Monday’s protest, said they would announce fresh agitation plan after 72 hours.

Students of different public universities have been demanding reopening of halls which had been kept shut citing pandemic.
