Teaching and learning in the digital age

There is no denying the fact that a revolution has taken place in education in the digital age. Technology has replaced the teachers’ centered teaching and learning.

The unlimited access to global resources has enriched teaching and learning to a height. These days the generation is not confined to thousand years’ chalk and talk approach in teaching and learning, rather being engaged in shared experience and ideas in a transformative approach.

It seems not astounding if students opine that Google is the best teacher. In today’s world students are no more dependent on teachers to seek answers of their questions, rather they can get all the solutions instantly entering the Google search engine that has made a revolution in education system as the integration of technology in education has provided them freedom and flexibility.

In the digital age we believe that education is not merely one way source of information which teachers usually provide through their lecturing. Apart from this, it is not all about making the learners habituated to memorizing the information what teachers advise to do, rather it is an absolute process where teachers help the learners to discover their hidden potentials and the digitized teaching and learning provide all corresponding supports to the teachers and students to enhance effective education in the digital age.

Computed devices are being incorporated in the class in a bid to ensure interactions between teachers and learners that ultimately lead to ensuring maximum outcome from education. Studies show that incorporating ICT in the classroom has manifold advantages. It increases motivation of the learners to promote autonomous learning.

Students can play active role in the class being facilitated by their teachers and they do not depend on the teachers’ lectures all the time, rather they are found to enjoy freedom while they are in the class full of technological devices creating students’ centeredness and involvement other than that of the domination of the teachers. It is evident that teachers’ domination slows the learning systems and obstructs the learners on their way to stay motivated in learning.

Not only that, technology integration in education helps to develop creativity amid the learners as it makes learners engaged directly and so the system fosters critical thinking of the learners. For this, they can enhance communication and foster research and cooperative learning in the class which contribute to boosting their overall performance. Even it is not urgent to be present in the class, staying outside of the class someone may get connected online and access all the information discussed in the class.

The findings of different studies show that learners get the chance to interact in the computer assisted class as they like to interact through email, text, audio and video conferencing. Besides, the use of speaker, earphone, CD, audio and video in the classroom makes them interactive and cooperative.

We know that once teachers hardly found any sources of information but reading and reviewing some prescribed books before attending their class. But these days have gone. Only with a one click, teachers find huge information for their class. Somebody needs to sort out, which information they need for their purpose. It is not at all time-consuming, compared with the traditional way of finding information in some prescribed books. Books, articles, journals, class materials along with the prescribed guideline of teaching are all available online.

It is obvious that amid the Covid-19 pandemic digital education has been the only weapon to tackle the education catastrophe around the world. In Bangladesh though the remote education is comparatively new, this trend has got momentum as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic hit hard the country as no alternative was left in the arena of teaching-learning without going online. Initially, many teachers underwent difficulties to conduct class online but with the time they have developed their efficiency in teaching on the new normal digital platform.

Truly, digitization in teaching and learning has minimized our many complications in regard to bringing outcomes from education these days though a great number of learners have hardly access to the ongoing digitized remote education due to many unavoidable reasons. In this prolonged closure, students can get accustomed to searching for necessary knowledge to get them updated, which has been possible due to innovations in the digital age.

However, there may be some challenges while getting engrossed entirely on digital blessings in education. It is evident that in many cases book reading habit of both teachers and students has declined as they are found largely dependent on Google and other search engines to get their knowledge and information. They are glued to the knowledge available online and hardly try to create innovations with their own creativity. Not only that, many teachers and learners select wrong and fake materials causing academic despondency. Also, many may grow online addiction.

Besides, they develop the tendency of becoming addicted to copy-paste culture while they are learning, which is a constant threat for their education and future life along with a dire impact on the country’s education system.

Lastly, living amid the digital era, denying digital privileges is nothing but an act of foolishness. It is imperative to create revolution in education taking full-fledged scope from the digital world. It is time to modify our existing teaching and learning equipped with all sort of digital blessings to meet the challenges in the field of education. But one thing is apparent that in all regards, it is a must to ensure the proper use of the technology in education.
