Sabbir blitz steers Barisal to final
Sabbir Rahman of Barisal Bulls hammers a boundary during his heroic knock of 79 as Rangpur Riders wicketkeeper Mohammad Mithun looks on helplessly in the Qualifier-2 of BPL third edition at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital yesterday. Independent photo

Sabbir Rahman Rumman finally excelled in a moment when it mattered most as he led Barisal Bulls to the BPL final, hitting a belligerent 49 ball-79 which steered the side to a five-wicket win over Rangpur Riders in the Qualifier-2 match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.  Bulls will take on Comilla Victorians in the grand finale of the BPL tomorrow (Tuesday). Riders who lost the first qualifier match to the Victorians compiled 160 for nine, a score, considered as match-winning but Sabbir’s onslaught helped Bulls to gun it down with three balls to spare.
His scintillating knock was complemented by Shahriar Nafees.

As Riders sniffed a victory, leaving Bulls 10 for two, the duo-Nafees and Sabbir then ruined it emphatically, plundering the bowlers all corner of the park ruthlessly. They shared 124 runs to take the side on the verge of the victory before Nafees was run out for 44.
But it needed a stunning catch to remove Sabbir as Darren Sammy magically kept his balance while the boundary rope was lurking in the corner. Sabbir hit three sixes and seven fours in the knock, some of which beautifully carved past the inner circle. Rangpur Riders innings was all about the overwhelming effort Lendl Simmons. He struck nine fours and two sixes in his 57 ball-73 that drove the side to a safe zone. He was ably supported by the new partner Abdullah Al Mamun who on his first match in the BPL, made a slow, yet handy 20 runs.  His 23 balls knock was significant considering the fact that no middle order batsmen could come up with resolute performance in the face of sustained aggression of the Bulls bowlers.
But Simmons got out when his service mattered most. He tried a scoop shot off Mohammad Sami to throw his wicket as the last power-play began. Darren Sammy smashed 23 off 10 to help Riders post a total, considered as match-winning but Sabbir Rahman Rumman’s decisive knock made all the difference.
