WASH's achievements celebrated

On the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence, an event was organised to celebrate the achievements of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the last 50 years. 

The programme highlighted the milestone successes in WASH sector of Bangladesh and reflected to accelerate the progress towards water, sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGD) and WaterAid in the capital’s Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel on Saturday, says a press release.

Md Khairul Islam, regional director of South Asia of WaterAid presented the keynote titled ’50 Years of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Bangladesh: Achievements and way forward’ at the programme.

During the event, discussants highlighted that Bangladesh has been successful in reducing the rate of open defecation to almost zero and ensured access to basic drinking water supply services for all.

The government is continuously addressing and eradicating WASH challenges in Bangladesh, which in turn will lead to access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene and ensure a sustainable management system for urban slum, rural population and hard-to-reach areas, the discussant mentioned. 

Minister Md Tazul Islam, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives,  was present as the chief guest.

Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam were present as special guests. Helal Uddin Ahmed, senior secretary of Local Government Division chaired the programme.

Saifur Rahman, chief engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), Engr Taqsem A Khan, managing director, Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA), and Professor Dr. M. Feroze Ahmed were present as the panel discussants.

The concluding speech and vote of thanks was delivered by Hasin Jahan, country director of WaterAid Bangladesh. The event was attended by government officials, representatives from WASH sector.
