Poush Sankranti- the occasion that marks the end of the Bengali month ‘Poush’ will be celebrated through the Shakrain festival in Old Dhaka today. The Shakrain Festival, also known as Kite Festival, is celebrated on this day. Shakrain is the oldest tradition of Old Dhaka. As part of the celebration, kites are flown high from the rooftops around the area in the afternoon. It often takes the form of a kite fighting, in which participants try to snag each other’s kite or cut other kites down. When night falls, fireworks lit up the sky of old Dhaka. Flame-eaters also gather up on the roofs to entertain everyone with their skills of manipulating fire. On the occasion, people from all over the city will gather in the old town to be a part of this dynamic event that includes flying kites, fire breathing and fireworks.
